While Apple has partially led the way up till now in terms of modern technology, there has been one major market they haven’t tapped into – video streaming. However, that all seems about to change. At an event in California on March 25th, CEO Tim Cook and a host of Hollywood celebrities set the ball rolling with the announcement that Apple TV+ would be launching later in fall 2019.
The Apple TV+ app, revealed to crowds by director Steven Spielberg, will become widely available later this year and will aim to take on the likes of Amazon and Netflix at their own game. The event was marked by the appearance of stars involved such as Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, Jason Momoa and Steve Carell – all of whom will be involved in bringing a number of unique shows to the streaming service. Sesame Street’s Big Bird was even in attendance, as Apple TV+ plans to generate unique family content alongside thrillers, daytime talk shows and more.
However, it wasn’t the only new service to launch at the event. The Apple Card, a new credit card launched by the tech giant, will debut in the US this summer. Built with assistance from MasterCard and Goldman Sachs, it will reportedly allow users to spend credit via their smart devices and through a physical card. It’s thought to be lining up along with the brand’s long-standing Apple Pay service, which you can use to pay for goods and services in stores as well as online.
Apple’s latest revelations were signposted to some extent, though it has interested many that no more physical devices were announced. With the brand having published sales figures earlier this year that surprised many – and not in a good way – it appears Tim Cook and the team may be heading back to the drawing board for further innovation as the year goes on. With the iPhone X and XS having drawn criticism from some users for not offering enough innovation, it will be interesting to see what handheld devices the firm announces later this year. Or, perhaps they won’t – but that seems doubtful from all angles.
