Trump: Democrats Oppose CIA Nominee Gina Haspel For Being 'Too Tough On Terror'
President Trump on Monday tweeted about his CIA nominee Gina Haspel. President Trump on Monday slammed Democrats who oppose Gina Haspel's nomination to lead the CIA. "My highly respected nominee for CIA Director, Gina Haspel, has come under fire because she was too tough on Terrorists. Think of that, in these very dangerous times, we have the most qualified person, a woman, who Democrats want OUT because she is too tough on terror. Win Gina!" Trump tweeted.  Haspel has faced scrutiny over her past record in the CIA. An op-ed piece in the Washington Post states, "Haspel was complicit in torture after the 9/11 attacks; her damning record has been widely reported. According to reports in the New York Times, The Post and elsewhere, the 33-year CIA veteran, who is currently deputy director of the agency, ran one of the CIA's black sites created after 9/11." In the wake of the controversy surrounding Haspel's nomination, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a statement at Thursday's press briefing. "In her 33 years at the agency, Acting Director Haspel has held senior positions around the globe, overseeing covert operations and counterterrorism efforts to protect the homeland," Sanders stated. "She's one of the most qualified, most capable individuals ever nominated to lead the CIA." Haspel is scheduled to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday for her confirmation hearing.
