It’s 2019 and not only is there already a major home-grown movie for Netflix to rave about, but it seems there is already a fairly harmful trend emerging in the maiden days of the year. In 2018, the dangerous online trend baffling many – though much of it was found to be faked – was the Tide Pod eating craze. In 2019, it appears that certain corners of the internet are fairly enamored with what is being referred to as the ‘Bird Box Challenge’ – and Netflix has made sure to warn their users against getting involved.

Bird Box is, reportedly, something of a record-breaker in terms of opening week viewership for the online streaming service. The apocalyptic thriller follows Sandra Bullock attempting to keep her family safe in a world where hideous, life-threatening beasts stand to kill everything in their way if there are even so much as looked at. Therefore, she’s strapped up with a makeshift blindfold – and it seems there are more than a few people attempting ‘challenges’ online without the benefit of sight – and it goes without saying that none of these trials should ever be attempted!

According to Indy 100, Netflix has already had to step in with regard to increasing interest in such challenges, having taken to Twitter to issue an impromptu statement – particularly as the movie in question continues to grow in popularity. Such challenges, reportedly, involve people blindfolding themselves performing everyday tasks – and as you can imagine, this could get incredibly dangerous, especially when it comes to moving up and down stairs.

Netflix US’ Twitter account is generally informal with its followers, throwing itself into meme culture and self-awareness – and their social media was just a pithy, albeit with a serious message, when it came to the Bird Box challenges. “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE,” Netflix’s cautionary tweet reads.

“We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.” The tweet has been ‘liked’ almost 300,000 times, meaning that some – if not all – are sitting up and taking notice.

We will have our own verdict for you on Bird Box very soon indeed – but please don’t prepare for the movie by blindfolding up in the meantime!
