Typhoon Mangkhut Makes Landfall on the Philippines

Typhoon Mangkhut made landfall Saturday morning, causing flooding and landslides across the Philippines' northern island.

At least  16 people have reportedly died  in the country so far, although that number is expected to rise.

Thousands of people  evacuated their homes  ahead of the storm's arrival.  Mangkhut is reportedly the strongest storm of the season so far, with wind speeds reaching up to 165 miles per hour upon landfall.

Even so, a  Philippines official told CNN  the storm hasn't been as bad as the government initially feared.

As of Saturday evening, the storm had passed over the Philippines and was  headed for southern China .
