A Banksy painting shed itself to pieces the moment it sold at auction for more than 1.3 million dollars.

"Girl with Balloon" was sucked into a shredder hidden in its frame just as the hammer fell.

Onlookers gasped and staff rushed to remove what was left.

It's one of the maverick street artist's best-known works - and the price matched his all-time record.

Banksy posted a picture of the prank unfolding with the words "going, going, gone".

'It appears we just got Banksy-ed," Southeby's auction house said.

Banksy's real identity isn't known.

His murals have popped up overnight in cities around the world.

It's not clear how the value of the self-destructing art-work has changed - and whether the buyer is left holding a shred of artworld history... or an investment in tatters.
