Hate Valentine's Day? This museum is for you

Tourists are ditching the Valentine's Day delirium for a dose of reality at Zagreb's Museum of Broken Relationships - expanded this year with bonds severed by war and all set to tour in Brexit-riven Britain.

Lauren Anthony reports.

Roses are red, violets are blue, and if you've experienced heartbreak - your memories could end up in a museum, too.

Behold the Museum of Broken Relationships in Croatia, which delivers a dose of reality to visitors.

It was expanded this year with an exhibit highlighting bonds severed by war and now has plans to tour in Britain, in the throes of its divorce with the EU.

All of its exhibits are donated by ordinary people who want to share their stories of lost love, or those of friends and relatives.

But some of the tales are more tragic than others.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) MUSEUM OF BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS CO-FOUNDER, DRAZEN GRUBISIC, SAYING: "We got it when we were in Istanbul two years ago, and the lady writes that they met, and they loved each other, and they arranged for a wedding, and they wanted summer to be the wedding time (...) But then her to be husband to be died in a terrorist attack.

And then she gave us this." The items are largely unusual - from prosthetic legs to mini furniture.

And some are especially tongue in cheek.

Because sort of all the problems the lady had with the guy, who left her of course, she kind of knitted into this sweater.

And through creation she got rid of the pain and trouble that she had." The museum was started in 2006 and routinely does overseas tours.

So far it's notched up 50 cities around the world.
