'National Emergency': This is How President Trump Plans to Get His 'Border Wall' Money

In order to get the funding for his border wall proposal, President Trump declared a national emergency to redirect funds from other departments.

'National Emergency': This is How President Trump Plans to Get His 'Border Wall' Money

“I am going to be signing a national emergency” says President Trump who spoke from the Rose Garden of the White House about his proposed border wall plan.????After battling Congressional Democrats for nearly $6 billion for border wall funding, enduring the longest government shutdown, and receiving last-minute legislation to prevent another…????The president decided to bypass Congress and says his national emergency declaration will build $8 billion worth of new fencing at the U.S. southern border.????Trump is still set to sign the budget approved by Congress which allocates $1.375 billion for border security.????The White House says through the president’s national emergency declaration; $3.6 billion will be redirected from military construction, ????and through a separate executive action take $2.5 billion from the Defense Department’s drug interdiction program and $600 million from the Treasury Department’s asset-forfeiture fund to for his border wall.????The redirected funds added to the $1.375 billion approved by Congress accounts for the new $8 billion figure.????White House officials said that this will allow them to build nearly 234 miles of border barriers including a bollard-style wall.????With the military construction budget being depleted, an official said that lower priority projects would be affected and added that money for disaster-relief would not be touched.????Members of both parties have criticized the president’s decision in the run-up to his official declaration although Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell yesterday offered his public support from the Senate floor.????Democrats are expected to push back either with legislation or through the courts.????Representatives Joaquin Castro and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are expected to propose a bill to challenge President Trump’s declaration.
