Irish police join probe into London parcel bombs

Irish police are helping their British colleagues investigate who mailed three small bombs to transportation hubs in London on Tuesday (March 5).

The packages were discovered at three locations - including Europe's busiest international airport Heathrow where one caused a small fire in an office building.

Also London City airport and Waterloo train station.

No-one was injured by the devices.

A source said they were posted from the Republic or Ireland.

Conflict over the British-ruled province of Northern Ireland claimed thousands of lives from the late 1960s, until the Good Friday peace agreement in 1998.

The latest incident is a stark reminder of a potential threat.

The United Kingdom is on its second-highest level of terrorism alert, which means security services see the likelihood of an attack by international terrorists as "highly likely".
