New Zealand police are looking for an 'active shooter' in the center of Christchurch, after a gunman opened fire at a mosque.

One witness said he saw many dead or injured.

(ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION) New Zealand police were hunting "an active shooter" in the center of Christchurch city on Friday (March 15) after a gunman opened fire at a mosque inflicting several casualties with one witness saying he saw many dead or injured.

Media reported that a gunman opened fire inside mosque in Christchurch's Hagley Park district.

There were reports of armed police at a second mosque in the suburb of Linwood.

A witness interviewed by TVNZ said he saw many injured and dead people at the mosque.

People in center of the city should stay indoors, police said.

All Christchurch schools and council buildings have been placed into lockdown.

Police did not immediately comment on whether the incident took place in the mosque or nearby.

There is no official confirmation on casualties.
