UK parliament 'can't vote on same Brexit deal'

British Prime Minister Theresa May suffered a fresh Brexit setback on Monday (March 18) when the speaker of parliament John Bercow said any proposal she puts to lawmakers must be substantially different to the ones previously rejected by them.

UK parliament 'can't vote on same Brexit deal'

British Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit plans were thrown into turmoil once again on Monday When parliamentary speaker, John Bercow, said she could not submit the SAME Brexit deal to yet another vote.

May's divorce deal was defeated in the House of Commons for the first time in January and then again last week.

And there had been rumours she was going to submit it for a third time.

Bercow is the ultimate arbiter of whether the government can again ask parliament to pass May's deal to leave the European Union.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE, JOHN BERCOW, SAYING: "What the government cannot legitimately do is to resubmit to the House (of Commons) the same proposition or substantially the same proposition as that of last week which was rejected by 149 votes." According to precedents stretching back to 1604, parliamentary rules say that substantially similar proposals cannot be presented for a vote more than once during the same session of parliament.

However, Bercow said his ruling should not be considered the last word on the matter And the government could still bring forward a new proposition that was not the same as the one that had already been voted on.

But time is running out - as the clock ticks down to Brexit on March 29.
