‘Russia has to get out’ of Venezuela: Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday called on Russia to pull its troops from Venezuela and warned that "all options" were open to make that happen.

Nathan Frandino has more.

‘Russia has to get out’ of Venezuela: Trump

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "Russia has to get out." U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday called on Russia to pull its military forces from Venezuela, days after a Russian government plane landed near Caracas, carrying nearly 100 troops.

The move prompted a vague warning from Trump.

Just so you understand, all options are on the table." Two Russian air force planes carrying the soldiers landed on Saturday.

The U.S. government believes the troops include special forces and cybersecurity personnel.

Trump made his comments in the Oval Office during a meeting with Fabiana Rosales, the wife of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who Trump said he was behind quote "100 percent." Venezuela has been in the throes of a crippling political crisis.

After President Nicolas Maduro's 2018 re-election, Guaido invoked the constitution to assume the interim presidency, calling the vote a fraud.

Guaido has been recognized as the nation's rightful leader by most Latin American and Western nations, with Russia continuing to back the socialist Maduro regime, who retains control of the military.

With its economy in shambles, Venezuela is grappling with food shortages and enduring its second major blackout this month with millions of Venezuelans lacking power.
