Jacob Rees-Mogg, a leading Brexiteer in UK Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party, told reporters "it's a rotten day for democracy" after May's Brexit deal was rejected for a third time on Friday (March 29) .

Lawmakers rejected May's Brexit deal, leaving Britain's withdrawal from the European Union in turmoil on the very day it was supposed to leave the bloc.

After a special sitting of parliament, lawmakers voted 344-286 against May's 585-page EU Withdrawal Agreement, agreed after two years of tortuous negotiations with the bloc.

Rees-Mogg, an influential lawmaker had backed May's deal but had previously criticised it.

He told reports on Thursday (March 27): "I don't like her deal, I make no bones about this, I don't think the deal has suddenly got better but simply that the alternative is worse, it's not having any Brexit at all."
