(ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION) The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Image Awards celebrated its 50th anniversary in Hollywood on Saturday (March 30), bringing the show from Pasadena to the home of the Oscars, the Dolby Theatre.

The Academy, who oversee the Oscars, gave the organisers special permission to use the venue for their anniversary despite having exclusivity over the venue.

"It's 50 years of the NAACP Image Awards, 50 years of an effort to make sure that an image of black folks in America has been portrayed in a proper fashion," said NAACP chairman Leon Russell.

"It's also 50 years of an effort to ensure that people of color can be in front of, behind, writing, producing, directing, that we can be totally engaged in the industry." Diversity and representation have become more prevalent in Hollywood in recent years.

Producer, writer and actress Lena Waithe told Reuters on the red carpet "I think what Hollywood has recognized is that not just black people want to see black people on screen.

Everyone wants to watch us on screen.

We're interesting, we're entertaining, we're fun to look at but the other thing now is not just profiting off our culture and our bodies and our skin but letting us have ownership of things that we are making as well."
