Riot police clash with yellow vest and anti-capitalist 'black bloc' protestors during May Day demonstrations in Paris

Police fired tear gas and stun grenades, while some protesters threw bottles, rocks and fireworks as a May Day protest turned violent in Paris.

Footage captured today (May 1) shows police charging a crowd of protesters, using riot shields and batons.

More than one hundred people have been arrested, agencies reported.

Thousands of police are on the streets of the French capital for May Day, when workers and left-wing movements traditionally hold demonstrations in France and around the world.

This year's protests follow months of regular protests in France by 'gilet jaune' or yellow vest protesters.

The yellow vest protests were originally triggered by a fuel tax rise late in 2018, but which has since extended to anger at the cost of living and other demands.

The so-called 'black bloc' is a more left-wing movement — typically considered an anti-capitalist or anarchist.
