China says Tiananmen crackdown was "justified"

(ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION) China will fight anyone who tries to interfere in its "reunification" with Taiwan, Defence Minister Wei Fenghe said on Sunday (June 2) in a combative speech peppered with threats against the United States over its military presence in Asia.

In a rare acknowledgement of the bloody crackdown on protesters around Beijing's Tiananmen Square 30 years ago, Wei said it was the "correct" decision which led to a stable country since then.

It is rare for Chinese government officials to acknowledge the events of June 4, 1989; references to it are heavily censored in China.

Wei also criticized the U.S. for naval operations in the disputed South China Sea, but added that conflict or war between the two countries would be a disaster.
