Ford says it will have cut 12,000 jobs in Europe by the end of next year.

The U.S. automaker is trying to return its operations in the region to profit.

As part of the restructuring it's ending output at three plants in Russia.

Factories in France and Wales also set to close.

And shifts have been reduced in Spain and Germany.

The job losses will reduce Ford's European headcount by around a fifth.

They won't come as shock to affected workers.

Back in January the firm announced a sweeping business review, and said cuts would be inevitable.

Like all automakers, Ford faces huge costs developing the next generation of electric and driverless vehicles.

It also faces a shrinking market.

On Thursday (June 27) the European association of car makers said sales in the region would fall one percent this year.

It had previously predicted growth of the same amount.
