Trump and Kim to reopen talks after historic DMZ meeting

U.S. President Donald Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to set foot in North Korea on Sunday when he met its leader, Kim Jong Un, in the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, between the two Koreas and agreed to resume stalled nuclear talks.

Lauren Anthony reports.

This is the moment President Donald Trump made history, as he became the first sitting U.S leader to set foot in North Korea.

He shook hands warmly with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, located between the two Koreas.

And he said he was happy to make that step.

SOUNDBITE (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "I just want to say that this is my honor, I didn't really expect it, we were in Japan for the G20 we came over, and I said, 'Hey, I'm over here, I want to call Chairman Kim.'

And we got to meet, and stepping across that line was a great honor.

A lot of progress has been made, a lot of friendships have been made and this has been in particular, a great friendship.

So, I just want to thank you, that was very quick notice and I want to thank you." The pair agreed to a revival of nuclear talks, that have been stalled since their failed summit in Hanoi earlier this year.

Where they couldn't come to an agreement on North Korea's weapons program.

Little progress has been made on that front so far.

Both parties were seemingly in good spirits.

Kim Jong Un praised President Trump for his willingness to 'work towards a new future'.

And even invited the U.S. president to Pyongyang.

In return Trump extended a similar offer.

This time, the leaders expressed hopes for peace on the old Cold War frontier, that for decades has symbolized the hostility between their countries.
