U.S. headed back to Women’s World Cup finals

The defending champion United States reach the women’s World Cup final for the fifth time after a close 2-1 win over England.

U.S. headed back to Women’s World Cup finals

After a nail-biter against England in the semifinals, the U.S. women are headed to their second World Cup Final in a row, their fifth since 1991.

Fans worldwide from Brooklyn to England to Groupama Stadium in Lyon, France were set for a competitive matchup...and they were not disappointed.

In a stunning decision made minutes before the match, U.S. co-captain Megan Rapinoe was scratched from the starting lineup due to an apparent hamstring injury.

This coming days after she scored twice during the quarter-finals against France.

In an excitement-filled first half, the U.S. scored two times - both headers - from striker Christen Press and forward Alex Morgan.

England kept it close though, when forward Ellen White scored in the 19th minute.

As for the second half...defense won out.

A missed penalty kick in the 83rd minute by England’s captain Steph Houghton all but sealed it for the U.S. With the win, the U.S. now awaits the winner of Netherlands/Sweden Wednesday for a chance to win back-to-back World Cup titles.
