Lampard says that he is ready to manage Chelsea

'I believe in myself completely', says new Chelsea boss Frank Lampard despite having had just one season's experience as a manager

Lampard says that he is ready to manage Chelsea

(SOUNDBITE) (English) REPORTER ASKING: "Do you believe you've got the experience that's needed to carry out this role?" (SOUNDBITE) (English) NEW CHELSEA HEAD COACH FRANK LAMPARD SAYING: "I presumed that question would come quite early!

I would say that I thought about it a lot because I know that it is an obvious question and I understand it, because in one year in professional management and to get the Chelsea job, doesn't come around very often.

I think football is probably littered with stories of inexperienced managers who've done really, really well, some spectacularly well, and some that don't, and probably really experienced managers, some do really, really well and some that don't.

"So I think I'm not really - I don't want to go before and start saying I'm worried about this, I'm worried about that, what I do believe in is that in my playing career, I played under a lot of managers, fantastic managers, things I learnt along the way that I've tried to mould into being myself.

So I think that stands me in good stead.

I've had one year at Derby where I think I learned a lot in one year, and also I think I know a lot about this club and feel this club and know how it works.

I have to prove that, simple as that.

"People will question it.

I'm ready for that, completely ready for that.

I believe in myself completely and I want to show that I'm ready to manage this club, whether I've had one year's experience or ten years' experience, what I think will define me, define my time here, will be my work ethic and what I put into it, to try and bring success." STORY: Chelsea appointed Frank Lampard as their manager on Thursday (July 4), as owner Roman Abramovich turned to a fan favourite rather than an experienced hand to replace Maurizio Sarri and lead the club into a new era.

Lampard, adored by Chelsea fans as the heart and soul of the club's midfield during a trophy-laden 13 years at Stamford Bridge, was handed a three-year contract having left second tier Derby County.

A relative rookie as a manager, the 41-year-old Lampard earned plaudits for taking Derby into the Championship playoff final in his first year in the dugout -- even if they just missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

Derby said an undisclosed compensation package had been agreed with Chelsea and wished Lampard well.

Lampard faces no small task in returning Chelsea to the status of Premier League title contenders following Sarri's departure to Juventus and Eden Hazard's move to Real Madrid.

His rebuilding efforts at Chelsea will also be hampered by a FIFA transfer ban.

The former England midfielder played a key role in Chelsea's golden era, making 648 appearances and scoring a club record 211 goals between 2001-2014.

In that time, he won three Premier League titles as well as the Champions League.
