The women's victory is the second in a row in which they will be honored with such a parade, the last coming in 2015.

That celebration four years ago marked the first time a women's team was recognized with a ticker tape parade since the New York tradition began in 1886, the Downtown Alliance organization behind the parade told Reuters.

Ticker tape was first thrown onto the street by Wall Street brokers to celebrate the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty.

Ever since, more than 200 official ticker tape parades have been held in New York, usually to celebrate championship sports teams, but also to honor visiting dignitaries.

Before the latest news of the financial world was digitized, results were displayed on running paper "tickers" that showed the latest numbers.

With the Wall Street ticker a relic of the past, the tradition has nevertheless been maintained.

The Alliance for Downtown invited the media to watch its workers organize the bags of shredded on the eve of the parade.

The bags will be handed out to office workers, who in turn will throw the paper into the streets from their office windows.
