Pro-Democracy Activist Denise Ho Interrupted by Chinese Representatives During United Nations Speech

Singer and democracy activist Denise Ho was interrupted by representatives from China on July 8 while calling for the United Nations Human Rights Council to acknowledge the anti-extradition bill protests in Hong Kong and protect the city’s locals.

Ho, who regularly attends pro-democracy events in Hong Kong, said the city’s liberties were under “interference by the Chinese government” and called upon the council to remove China from the body.

She was interrupted twice by Dei Demao, Beijing’s delegate to the UN Human Rights Council, who rejected her “abusive language” and urged her to remember China’s policy of “one country, two systems,” a constitutional principle that allows for Hong Kong to have its own administrative system while under Chinese jurisdiction.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang responded to Ho’s remarks on July 9, calling her request for China to be removed from the UN Human Rights Council as “nothing more than a pipe dream.” Credit: UN Web TV via Storyful
