‘I was 19’ Richard Branson remembers the moon landing

On July 20, 1969, Richard Branson sat down with his family in their cottage in the British countryside to watch history being made.

Seeing astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin take their historic steps onto the surface of the moon on his parents' small black-and-white television inspired the future entrepreneur and billionaire to found his own space company, Virgin Galactic.

"I don't think there's any event that that has blown my breath away more than that particular day.

And I remember thinking one day I'll become an astronaut.

And I waited years and years and years.

It never happened and so, in the end, I said 'screw it, let's do it, let's build a space line'.

And that's what we've spent the last 14 years doing," Branson said in an interview at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Branson founded Virgin Galactic in 2004 and is racing against Blue Origin, the space business of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, to bring tourists into space.
