The results are in: Boris Johnson is the UK's new prime minister.

The Brexiteer-in-chief has won the Conservative party leadership race, against Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Securing his place at 10 Downing Street, after Theresa May resigned for failing to get her plan for leaving the European Union through a divided British parliament.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) INCOMING BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, BORIS JOHNSON, SAYING: "Like some slumbering giant we are going to rise and ping off the guy-ropes of self-doubt and negativity with better education, better infrastructure, more police, fantastic full-fibre broadband sprouting in every household.

We are going to unite this amazing country and we are going to take it forward." And in his first days on the job, Johnson is set to be faced with an overflowing mailbox.

The expectation on his head as leader is that he'll deliver Brexit by the end of October.

Build a solid relationship - and trade ties - with U.S. president Donald Trump.

Manage tensions with Iran.

And govern without a parliamentary majority.

On top of that, Johnson's popularity within his own party isn't guaranteed.

Finance minister Philip Hammond said he would resign if Johnson got the top job.

Rather than wait to be sacked.

And a junior minister resigned Monday (July 22) over Johnson's' pledge to deliver Brexit by October 31, "do or die".

Johnson will take office on Wednesday (July 24).

Shortly after May takes her resignation to the Queen.

U.S. President Donald Trump was one of the first to congratulate him on his victory.

And said - quote - that "he will be great!".
