Greenpeace Activists Block Johnson Motorcade Outside Buckingham Palace

Protesters with Greenpeace who wore shirts and sashes declaring a “climate emergency” formed a human chain to block Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s motorcade as he approached Buckingham Palace in London to meet with Queen Elizabeth II on July 24.

Video released by Greenpeace UK shows demonstrators forming a human chain to block the avenue on which the prime minister’s motorcade was traveling.

Police can be seen breaking the chain to allow cars to pass as one activist stood holding out a letter.

In a post on social media, Greenpeace said the letter contained “answers to tackling the Climate Emergency” and challenged the newly elected Conservative leader to act.

After the demonstration briefly delayed Johnson, he continued to Buckingham Palace without further incident and met with the Queen Elizabeth II, who officially asked him to form a government.

Earlier on Wednesday, former Prime Minister Theresa May visited the queen to tender her resignation as head of government, news reports said.

Johnson was elected leader of the Conservative Party on July 23 and assumed his role as prime minister on July 24.

He previously served as Mayor of London and and foreign secretary, and was a proponent of the United Kingdom’s “Leave” campaign to exit the European Union.
