In May, a U.S. court filing showed that U.S. authorities had targeted Hernandez in an investigation of large-scale drug trafficking and money laundering, related to the drug trafficking case against Hernandez's brother.

Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the Americas, with protesters lamenting a lack of economic opportunities and widespread crime.

Critics of the conservative U.S.-ally also accuse Hernandez and his supporters of committing fraud in 2017's president election.

An initial vote count in the November 26 election showed an election victory for the left, before counting was abruptly paused by the electoral body and then resumed to show a surprise Hernandez victory.
