Dramatic footage shows bystanders restraining a man after he stabbed a woman in downtown Sydney on Tuesday (August 12) in a rampage.

Police say the incident appeared to be an unprovoked attack.

Earlier, a 21-year-old woman was found dead in an apartment building.

Police say there was no apparent link between the two victims. (SOUNDBITE) (English) NEW SOUTH WALES POLICE SUPERINTENDENT, GAVIN WOOD, SAYING: "A number of members of the public actually physically restrained the offender.

And I want to acknowledge those people, those members of the public who got involved, they were brave and I can only use that word seriously.

They were significantly brave people, to approach a person with a mindset of obviously what this person did, with clear evidence of a stabbing perviously, these people are heroes, and I want to acknowledge that.

They are now helping us with our enquiries, as are a number of people, and a number of members of the community." The offender was carrying a knife and a computer thumb drive containing information about deadly attacks in North America and New Zealand, police said.

But added that he did not appear to be acting for any terrorist groups.
