The migrants, most of whom are African, were picked up by the Open Arms boat off the coast of Libya and have spent more than two weeks waiting to disembark on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa.

Italy's far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, however, has refused the boat entry.

On Sunday the Spanish government offered to receive the migrants at the port of Algeciras.

However Open Arms said they were unable to dock in Spain due to an emergency situation on board.

Open Arms director and founder Oscar Camps said there were constant fights on board and the tension was unsustainable.
