At G7 summit, Britain's Johnson warns U.S. against escalating trade war with China

Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson made his debut on the world stage on Saturday (August 23).

Arriving in France for the G7 summit, the UK's leader will want to strike a balance between not alienating Britain's European allies and not irritating Donald Trump and possibly jeopardizing future trade ties.

Though he didn't waste much time in making his views clear.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UK PRIME MINISTER, BORIS JOHNSON, SAYING: "There are all sorts of people, who will take any excuse at all to interfere with free trade and to frustrate trade deals, and I don't want to see that.

I do want ..." JOURNALIST ASKING: "But on that note, will you be saying to Donald Trump he should not be escalating the trade war with China?" JOHNSON SAYING: "I do want to see the tragedy in Brazil tackled properly and that's what we're going to do and that's what the UK stands ready to support at a global level... And on trade with China, and on free trade generally - you betcha.

We are absolutely..." JOURNALIST ASKING: "But you're telling President Trump that he should not be escalating the trade war with China?" JOHNSON SAYING: "You bet, you bet, thank you." Johnson and Trump will hold bilateral talks on Sunday morning (August 25).

The British PM said ahead of the meeting that the UK would not retreat from its responsibilities on the world stage after Brexit, nor sacrifice its belief in the global order.

A riposte to those who say leaving the European Union will diminish Britain's influence on the global stage.

And force a pivot toward Trump's unorthodox and often confrontational approach to diplomacy.
