Hurricane Dorian strengthens to Category 3 storm

Hurricane Dorian gained strength and slowly churned toward the U.S. mainland, alarming forecasters who worry parts of Florida will be walloped by strong winds, a storm surge and heavy rain for an extended period when it makes landfall early next week.

Hurricane Dorian strengthens to Category 3 storm

Dorian strengthened to a Category 3 storm on Friday, making it a potentially devastating hurricane, as it continues on its course toward the southeastern United States.

(SOUND BITE) (English) RON DESANTIS, FLORIDA GOVERNOR, SAYING: "The time to act is now." Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for all of the state's 67 counties, as the storm's path is uncertain.

(SOUND BITE) (English) RON DESANTIS, FLORIDA GOVERNOR, SAYING: "But the one thing that's been pretty certain is that this thing's been getting stronger." Hurricane Dorian is expected to slam into the state early next week as a Category 4 storm - packing 130 mile per hour winds.

(SOUND BITE) (English) RON DESANTIS, FLORIDA GOVERNOR, SAYING: "Make the preparations that you need.

You do have some time, but that time is running out." DeSantis urged residents to stock up on at least a week's worth of food and supplies, prompting a run on Costcos and Home Depots across the state.

(SOUND BITE) (English) FLORIDIAN WAITING IN LINE SAYING: "I've never seen anything like this.

Never." The National Hurricane Center said on Friday that Dorian poses a significant threat to the Bahamas and Florida.

(SOUND BITE) (ENGLISH) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "Our highest priority is the safety and security of the people." On Thursday, President Donald Trump called off his planned trip to Poland to deal with the hurricane.

(SOUND BITE) (ENGLISH) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "Very important for me to be here.

The storm looks like it could be a very, very big one indeed." Forecasters said on Friday that Dorian will batter parts of Florida with strong winds and heavy rain for an extended period, increasing the likelihood of life-threatening storm surge and flash flooding.
