Former UK prime minister Tony Blair has waded back into the Brexit debate, to warn that a no-deal exit could threaten Britain's unity.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FORMER BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, TONY BLAIR, SAYING: "A no-deal Brexit is a threat to the United Kingdom, there's no doubt about that.

It's a threat to Northern Ireland remaining in the United Kingdom, it's a threat to Scotland remaining in the United Kingdom.

Do I hope either of these things happen?

No, of course, and I will argue strongly against it..." The Labour party's ex-leader also said the government is insulting the very people who have the final say on whether the UK leaves with a deal.

He's referring to current Prime Minister Boris Johnson's phone calls with his Irish and German counterparts on Tuesday.

After the calls, Ireland's Leo Varadkar said it would be difficult to bridge gaps in the UK and EU positions, while Angela Merkel said a deal was 'overwhelmingly unlikely'.

There's little over three weeks until the UK is due to leave the bloc -- with or without a deal.
