The march hasn't been authorized by the city's police.

But protesters plan to march anyway from Hong Kong's main shopping district, to a famous zone for nightlife, Lan Kwai Fong Protesters will be venting their anger after Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam used colonial-era emergency powers to ban face masks at some public gatherings this month.

The ban's been largely ignored and it's not clear if and how it will be enforced on Halloween.

Masks for the holiday aren't part of the ban, so it may be tough for police to spot the difference between protesters and party-goers.

Halloween is typically one of the busiest nights bars and restaurants downtown.

They've have taken a hit - along with the broader economy -- from the the five months of ongoing protests.

Protesters are angry at what they see as Beijing's increasing interference in the city.

China denies meddling, and has accused foreign governments of stirring up trouble, including the U.S. and Britain.

Ahead of tonight's mix of protests and revelry, authorities have tightened security and will shut down the metro early.

Some local media have reported that police plan to station some 3,000 riot officers across Hong Kong island.
