Hong Kong protesters hold mass ‘Thanksgiving’ rally

Thousands of protesters in Hong Kong symbolically gave thanks to America as the U.S. celebrates its Thanksgiving holiday, while China warned Washington on Thursday that it would take "firm counter measures" in response to U.S. legislation backing anti-government protesters in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong protesters hold mass ‘Thanksgiving’ rally

Thousands of protesters in Hong Kong are giving thanks to the United States.

On Thursday, they staged a so-called ‘Thanksgiving rally’.

The show of appreciation, held symbolically on the day the U.S. celebrates its Thanksgiving holiday, comes after President Donald Trump signed into law congressional legislation which supported the protesters… that's despite angry objections from Beijing, with which Trump is seeking a deal to end the ongoing trade war.

The new U.S. law requires the State Department to certify, at least annually, that Hong Kong has enough autonomy from China to justify favorable U.S. trading terms. It also threatens sanctions for human rights violations in the city.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman on Thursday gave a stern warning to the United States, which it claims, is interfering with Hong Kong’s internal affairs (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN, GENG SHUANG, SAYING: "The Chinese government is unwavering in its determination to oppose any external forces interfering in Hong Kong's affairs, to implement "one country, two systems", and to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests.

We advise the United States not to act arbitrarily, otherwise China will take firm countermeasures." For months, demonstrators have shown anger at what they see as Beijing's meddling in the freedoms promised to them when the former British colony was returned to Chinese rule 22 years ago.

China denies interfering in Hong Kong - which has enjoyed a rare lull in violence over the past week, after local elections on Sunday delivered a landslide victory to pro-democracy candidates.
