Chicago cop suspended for bodyslam during arrest

A Chicago police officer seen on video body-slamming a 29-year-old man during an arrest has been suspended.

The video, which was recorded on a cellphone by a passerby, was described by that city's mayor on Twitter as "highly disturbing." The incident took place on Thanksgiving Day when police approached the man who was drinking alcohol at a bus stop, according to media reports.

Police said the man became agitated, threatened the officer and spat on his face.

The officer then hurls the man forcefully onto the sidewalk.

The man appears to be motionless during the short video.

He was later treated at a hospital before being released into police custody.

A civilian police oversight board has opened an investigation but asked the officer be stripped of his police powers and the police department agreed.

A police spokesman called the move an "emergency takedown" but said the department is taking complaints from the public seriously.
