President Donald Trump is now one step closer to becoming the third president impeached in American history.

On Friday the Democratic-controlled House Judiciary Committee approved two articles of impeachment against Trump.

The charges: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The vote: 23 to 17, along party lines.

Democrats voted in favor, accusing the president of pressuring Ukraine into opening an investigation into one of Trump's political rivals.

MARY GAY SCANLON, SAYING: ''We have the president's own words, ''I want you to do us a favor, though.'' After Friday's vote, Republicans condemned the impeachment process.

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) REP MIKE JOHNSON, SAYING: "You don't get to remove a president because you don't like him.

They did not produce a scintilla of evidence to support a charge of impeachment." Trump blasted the Democrats.

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) US PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "There was nothing done wrong.

To use the power of impeachment on this nonsense is an embarrassment to this country." Friday's action sets up a full House vote on whether to impeach the president next week.

If the Democratic-controlled House votes to impeach, the matter goes to trial in the Republican-controlled Senate, which has shown no interest in removing Trump from office.
