U.S. to restrict visas for Iranian judges and officials

The United States will restrict visas for current or former Iranian officials who abuse or detain peaceful protests, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday (December 19), as Washington ramps up its pressure campaign on the Islamic Republic.

"Thugs killing people's children will not be allowed to send their own children to study in the United States," Pompeo said.

The announcement comes the same day the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on two Iranian judges whom it accuses of having punished Iranian citizens and dual nationals for exercising their freedoms of speech and assembly.

The sanctions would freeze all property of the two judges under U.S. jurisdiction and generally bar American citizens from dealing with them.
