PEOPLE WALKING AROUND PLAZA DE MAYO STORY: Diego Maradona met Argentine President Alberto Fernandez on Thursday (December 26) at the Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires and lifted a miniature replica of the World Cup he won in 1986 in Mexico from the balcony overlooking the Plaza de Mayo.

Fernandez is a fan of Argentinos Juniors, the club for which Maradona made his debut.

Maradona last month decided to stay on as coach of Argentine club Gimnasia y Esgrima in a surprising about turn, after saying he was leaving his job at the struggling first division side.

Maradona had taken the job in September on the condition Gabriel Pellegrino stay on as club president and Pellegrino's decision not to run had caused Maradona's surprise resignation.

Maradona, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, took over at Gimnasia y Esgrima based in La Plata, just outside Buenos Aires, charged with helping them avoid relegation.

They are currently 17th in the 20-team Superliga at the halfway stage.
