Ukraine asks for FBI help in Burisma hacking probe

Ukraine has appealed to the FBI for help to investigate a suspected cyber attack it believes was orchestrated by Russia's military on the energy company Burisma Holdings.

This is the same company at the center of President Trump's impeachment -- the company Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, once sat on the board of.

The company that Trump had once asked Ukrainian authorities to investigate, what opponents in congress call an abuse of power.

Ukrainian interior ministry officials confirmed its suspicion on Thursday (January 16).

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UKRAINIAN INTERIOR MINISTRY OFFICIAL, ARTEM MINYAILO, SAYING: "It is noted that the hacker attack most likely took place in cooperation with the Russian special services," They say that hackers are believed to have stolen personal employee data and e-mails from executives at Burisma and other companies.

While Hunter Biden did previously sit on the board at Burisma, no evidence has ever been made public of wrongdoing by he or his father, who reject Trump's allegations of corruption.

Ukraine's cyber police said they had not formally received any request from the company for help.

The leak of stolen data has the potential to affect the impeachment proceedings against Trump and even the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) INTERIOR MINISTRY OFFICIAL DENYS LENETS SAYING: "Ukraine cannot ignore such illegal act on its territory.

After the analysis of these files, the National police of Ukraine, basing on the fact of the publication of these files, has initiated criminal proceeding." Russia's defense ministry did not respond to a request for comment about the findings.
