Migrants, security forces clash at Guatemala-Mexico border

Scuffles briefly broke out on the Guatemala-Mexico border on Saturday morning as a group of several hundred mostly Honduran migrants pressed forward to cross, only to be pushed back by Mexican security forces.

Jillian Kitchener has more.

Scuffles broke out on the Guatemala-Mexico border, Saturday, as hundreds of mostly Honduran migrants attempted to cross.

Mexican security officials briefly shut the border crossing and sought to calm a group of people who began pushing and shoving.

Scores of migrants have been arriving at the Mexican border in recent days, with the bulk of them still advancing in a larger caravan… bearing similarities to a caravan that tried to force its way through the same crossing in October 2018.

Authorities say around 4,000 people have arrived in Guatemala in recent days - the biggest surge since it signed an accord with the U.S. that increases pressure on them to deal with migrants.

Now - Mexico is being tested on how it complies with U.S. demands to contain migrant flows.

That's after President Donald Trump threatened to hurt Mexico and other Central American countries economically if they allow large groups to reach the U.S. border.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he is monitoring the approach of the migrants and has held out the prospect of jobs - specifically in southern Mexico - for those who want to stay.
