The wife of basketball legend Kobe Bryant has made her first public statement since the helicopter crash that took the life of her husband, teenage daughter, and seven others.

In a posting on her Instagram account, Vanessa Bryant thanks the outpouring of support and says she isn't sure what's next for her devastated family.

She writes: "I take comfort in knowing that Kobe and Gigi both knew that they were so deeply loved.

We were so incredibly blessed to have them in our lives." She also says she's set up a new relief fund to support families of other victims of the crash.

The pilot died with two girls attending a basketball tournament with young Gianna.

Three parents were also killed.

Investigators have made clear that it could take a year or longer to determine what ultimately brought down Kobe Bryant's luxury helicopter near Los Angeles.

But they know the pilot, an experienced and certified flight instructor, was trying to climb out of a dense fog layer when the aircraft suddenly turned and flew toward the ground.

The chopper was not carrying a black box recorder, nor did it have any warning systems that would tell the pilot if he was flying too low, according to investigators.

The equipment is not required by law.
