Floodwaters in central Mississippi appeared to hit their peak on Monday, potentially allowing the area around the state capital Jackson to avoid any casualties after the Pearl River reached its highest level in 37 years, officials said.

This report produced by Zachary Goelman.

Homes in Jackson, Mississippi, were inundated with flood water on Monday (February 17).

Heavy rains last week lifted the Pearl River to its third-highest point in recorded history.

The water submerged streets in low-lying areas.

Mississippi declared a state of emergency on Saturday, one day after the city of Jackson issued a seven-day mandatory evacuation order for low-lying areas.

The state's governor said the flooding prompted 16 search-and-rescue operations to pluck people stranded in their homes.

Humans weren't the only ones in need of saving.

A local resident filmed this, showing volunteers on Sunday (February 16) looking for pets left behind.

Officials said it was too early to estimate the number of damaged homes but there had been no injuries as of Monday morning.
