>> to talk about golf history in the low country means that you are talking about the sport's birthplace in the united states.

The first golf club in this country can be traced back to 1786 at charleston green.

It's a rough triangle of green between rutledge and bare.

And we're joined by burt atkinson, the director and friends of the muni.

And thank you so much for being here.

So i'm not from charleston, and i hope that i said all of the streets correctly.

It's bufane?

>> yes, it's right down there by calhoun, and it's the first golf course in america.

>> it's amazing how it has grown coast-to-coast, but it has always been such a major sport here in the palmetto state.

>> it's funny, you have golf in that century, and then it disappears from 1800 to 1900, and then it reappears up in north charleston, and of course muni was part of that resurrection in the south.

>> municipal golf courses are important for the sport because it allows heel to enter in.

My father became an avid golfer in his later years, and he started at a municipal golf course.

>> they have so many programs, and they're geared to teaching women, men, and mainly kids.

An amazing thing has happened in the last ten years, they have gonna from a 150 kids to over 350 now, and they have maxed out on their programs, and we'll be expanding so they can expand the programs with the kids.

>> you're renovating the golf course.

>> we're going to try to keep the practice facilities open.

And right now, there's a big drainage project.

And on the backside, they have started to core out greens and restap them, and they have done a lot of work, and they're trying to create a pond to raise the level so you can play other than at low tide.

>> is it going to change the game?

>> you'll see improved conditions out there, how about that?

>> improved condition.

Tell us about the legacy of the particular golf course, because it is written in the contract to keep it a golf course in perpetuity.

>> in 1929, the land was donated by bissel jenkins, and he was a landowner, and he recognized the fact that he could help the community and probably increase the price of his real estate by giving the land to his city.

But his only caveat is it can only be used as a golf course, and if not, it reverts back to his family.

But he left room for a park, school and golf course.

>> jen: wonderful, and you have something for everyone to join in with the renovations to keep that legacy alive, and tell us about the event coming up.

>> this sunday, an oyster roast.

A 35-dollar tib.

And we have just about sold out.

Don't waste any time.

Buy your picture.

And oysters and chili and beer, bring the kids along, and we'll have putting games, and hopefully good weather.

>> keeping my fingers crossed, is it advisable to golf in the rain?

>> no.

>> and last question fur,-[ unintelligible ] >> i've been that person many years, and it's a little bit north of that right now.

>> nothing wrong with that, not at all.

And we'll have all of the information for you on our social media platform.

We have a couple of oyster roasts happening this saturday.

Over at trademan, and you can head out to the beautiful golf course on sunday.

Eat as many oysters as you possibly can.
