Next week NAMI will be meeting with state legislators about the needs surrounding mental illness

Morning and new on daybreak over 43 million adults are experiencing mental illness every year, according to the national alliance on mental illness, or nami.

And while more people are beginning to have open conversations about mental health, the stigma surrounding it still stands.

Nowánami here in rochester is trying to fight that stigma.

Kimt news three's madelyne watkins joins us to explain what the organization is doing, madelyne./// brooke, nearly 1 in every 25 adults here in the uás live with a serious mental illness.

Those range from bipolar disorder, anxiety and major depression to schizophrenia.

That's according to national alliance on mental illness á or nami southeast minnesota.

The organization is working to end the stigma around mental illness.

Tonight, nami is having a workshop where volunteers who are willing to share their stories with the public can learn how to best help the community through their own experiences.

Diana evans tells me the public feels a sense of comfort when hearing some "we all have a story, we all love hearing other people share about that.

So it's an opportunity to break down some of those stereotypes that might be involved around mental illness and have a personal side to it."

The workshop is open to anyone willing to share their experience.

It's tonight at nami on north broadway in rochester starting at 4:30.
