From tutorials on how to wear makeup with a face mask, to hats that incorporate a protective plastic face shield, South Koreans are turning innovative to make sure the coronavirus outbreak doesn't damage their reputation for style.

In grim times of the coronavirus, the medical mask doesn't have to make you look so drab says South Korean beauty Youtuber Ssunzy: (SOUNDBITE) (Korean) SOUTH KOREAN BEAUTY YOUTUBER, SSUNZY, SAYING: "I'm going to do a makeup that makes your face look good even when you're wearing a mask." A touch of highlighter on the nose, some earthy eyeshadow tones and it's time to show off your charm.

South Koreans are making sure the coronavirus outbreak doesn't damage their reputation for style.

(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) SOUTH KOREAN BEAUTY YOUTUBER, SSUNZY, SAYING: "I heard that it's very difficult to get a mask these days, I would recommend a water-type tint (that doesn't make a mask dirty) to those who have to wear a mask for up to two or three days." There are a few silver linings when wearing this new fashion and medical necessity for one, you don't have to worry about lipstick.

Fashion designer Park Youn-Hee also points to K-pop sensations like BTS, who have made the face mask fashionable.

With the scarcity of face masks, some South Koreans have turned to other ways of combining protection and fashion.

One item seen for sale in shops - hats with a clear plastic cover to protect the face.

(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) FASHION DESIGNER, PARK YOUN-HEE, SAYING: "It feels like I'm communicating with other people because it (the hat) is transparent.

It goes well with all casual clothing and I also see that there are many colour options.

Match the black (hat) with a black hoodie and add an accent to the bottom so it (the look) doesn't feel stuffy." "Think outside the box," instructs Park Youn-Hee and try experimenting with bold colours to make your mask pop.
