Coaching Through Social Distance

Cloverdale Senior continues coaching in a unique way.

With schools across the state of indiana switching to e- learning for the rest of the year... all after school programs have been canceled.

For one high school senior, these cancelations hit her to the very core.

Not because of what she was "losing", but because of what she thought she couldn't "give back".

Sports 10's marty ledbetter explains how she chose to rise up and give back in a "different" way.

Hello everyone i hope you're having a great day so far.

Meet sam shrum.

She's a senior basketball player at cloverdale high school and a key part in the clovers youth development programs. there were some teachers at the school who started some camps and they offered to let me come help.

I got close with a lot of the girls and they gave me the oppurtunity to setup my own camp.

Sam was living her best life, playing basketball for her high school during the winter, coaching the future generation of clovers in the off season.

Then along came covid-19.

Sam's camp, like so many other programs, was canceled.

I was the one sitting around, dreading this, thinking it was horrible and that was killing me.

So i had to figure out something to do.

And that's when it hit her...just because she couldn't be in the same room with her team, didn't mean she had to stop coaching them.

I started on monday, i've been uploading a quick video.

I've just had different ball handling drills.

The videos were initially just a way for sam to coach her team while also lifting her spirits.

But as the week has gone on she's discovered the videos mean even more to the kids and their families.

I've had parents message me like "this is way out of their comfort zone and you're helping them so much.

They are so excited when they get to take their video for you," and that makes me happy because i'm in the same position.

I don't feel comfortable taking the videos either, but i do it for them.

I love them and i love that they do it back for me.

It's not the ideal situation for anyone, but this senior found a way to still give back to the community she loves so much.

Cloverdale is where my heart is and i really enjoyed getting close to all the girls throughout this time.

I'd much rather be in the gym with them for this last time, but this is what it is and so we're making the most of it.
