Thai soldier shoots dead father-in-law prompting three-hour police standoff

A jealous soldier allegedly shot dead his father-in-law for convincing his wife to leave him sparking a three hour stand-off with armed police.

Army private Phubeth Klinphram, 37, allegedly killed his father-in-law then barricaded himself in a car in Samut Prakan, central Thailand last Sunday (April 19) afternoon.

His wife, Duangporn Singrueng, 34, who was also the eyewitness, alleged that she saw the angry private park outside the house then jump over the gate and walk up to father's room while holding a 9mm pistol.

She said: "We have been separated for over a month now.

I could not stand his abuse and violence so I decided to move back to my parents' house.

"Before the incident I was just picking up our daughter, but when I arrived here I saw him park his car behind me.

He then rushed into the house." Residents allegedly heard several gunshots before the soldier rushed back to his Ford Fiesta attempting to escape but the police arrived and shot the car tire to prevent him from escaping.

He then parked in front of the family home.

The suspect's sister also helped the authorities and tried to convince him to surrender, but to no avail.

The negotiations lasted for more than three hours until he was caught and arrested during the operation.

When the police entered the house, they found the dead body of Prasert Singrueng, 61, with one head shot and several gunshot wounds on the body.

Police Colonel Termrat Jindawat said that the army private resented his father-in-law after he told his daughter to leave him for hurting her.

He said: "The private believes that his father-in-law had convinced his wife to break-up with him because there were domestic violence problems in the relationship.

"I think the the suspect wanted to take revenge himself for his father-in-law taking his wife and daughter away from him."
