WCBI NEWS AT TEN - MAY 8, 2020

Thanks for staying up with us tonight..

Mississippi is set to reopen more areas of the economy, including some that many of you have asked about: salons and gyms. but the governor is also extending the safer at home by two weeks.

Now - state leaders are emphasizing the need for personal responsibility.

Courtney ann jackson has the latest..

A shift in strategy---that's how governor tate reeves described the latest announcement.

Reiterating a point he's made on several occasions that he doesn't think shutdowns are sustainable.

"we're reaching the point where the damage to these families is as disastrous as any virus.

I have to do what i believe is right."

He is extending the safer at home order for two weeks but allowing salons, barbershops and gyms to reopen beginning monday morning at 8 with specific guidelines and restrictions.

"let's all be honest: it is not because there is no risk associated with you going there.

There is risk every minute that you leave your home."

Reeves also making a plea for mississippians not to take these steps as a sign to throw the doors open and cast all cares aside.

"the virus is real.

It is a threat.

It is deadly.

Do not believe those voices which tell you there is no danger.

There is true danger-for all of us."

Still--there is some recognition that the virus is spreading more in some parts of the state.

"we cannot take a sledgehammer to the surgical process.

We need to be surgical in our responses.

Dr. dobbs has been talking over the last several days about the 10 to 12 counties where they have the most cases and of course the five or six counties that have really large number of cases on a per capita basis.

We've got to recognize that."

Reeves saying to 'stay tuned' when asked about whether those counties may have specific restrictions.

As far as other industries not covered by today's announcement - if they're currently closed--they'll stay closed for at least another two weeks because of the extension of the safer at home order..

Take vo off top tupelo city leaders waste no time setting up guidelines for those businesses preparing to reopen..

The new rules call for employers to develop policies on social distancing, temperature checks for employees, and proper sanitation.

They stop short of requiring face masks, as some cities have done, but do strongly encourage people to wear face coverings.

Mayor jason shelton says there is a lot to consider when considering restrictions for the general public.

"there's several things that come into play when you actually make that a rule and try and enforce it, could we enforce it in city of tupelo and how would we ensure everyone has access to a face mask and then, there's different concerns with allergies, and other things with people wearing them so it's best to talk to your doctor and follow the cdc guidelines" mayor shelton says his administration will no longer refer to businesses as essential or non essential..

Wipe to gfx the city of columbus is tapping the brakes as the governor's order drives some businesses to reopen..

Late this afternoon, columbus mayor robert smith released a statement saying all barber shops, salons, gyms, fitness clubs, tanning salons, and nail salons in the city shall remain closed until the restart columbus committees can meet on monday.

In west point, you may not be seeing as many familiar faces..

City leaders pass an ordinance requiring all employees and customers in retail stores to wear face coverings// the mayor says it's to reduce the spread of coronavirus, but as quentin smith finds, some store owners are worried about the backlash..

As customers shop inside petal pushers...pretty soon we're face coverings like this...will be the new norm.

" it caught me by surprise for a little bit.

I wasn't real sure that it was going to happen until i heard about it yesterday."

Scott reed owns the flower shop and admits, he has mixed views about making customers wear face coverings.

"i understand we need to keep people healthy, we need to keep people safe, so i'm all for masks if that's what needs to happen.

I'm just a little bit worried from a business owner about enforcing an ordinance like that and how it could affect my business if someone chooses not to wear a mask."

If someone comes in without their face being covered, business owners would be required to ask the customer to leave the store.

"a lot of people are saying that in response to this or an opposition to this, they are just going to not shop in west point anymore, and that bothers me more than anything.

Owners didn't have anything to do with this ordinance, and for them to protest in a way by avoiding our businesses, that's only hurting us, and our employees, and people who are depending on the store."

" hopefully the general public will comply."

Mayor robbie robinson says the measure was passed strictly for safety reasons.

Within the past week, he says there have been 22 cases of covid-19 and he believes this measure could help flatten the curve.

"the ordinance willnot take afft until monday, may 11 at noon.

There are some nuances about the language in the resolution that could possibly be addressed by the board early next week."

" honestly i hope some things change before it comes into play monday.

If things don't change, we will do the best that we can.

We're going to offer curbside if someone just doesn't want to wear a mask but still wants to shop here."

Customers are not required to strictly wear facemasks.

The face coverings can include a t- shirt.... bandanna... or anything covering the nose and the mouth... vice president pence's press secretary has tested positive for the coronavirus.

That's the second confirmed case among white house staff this week.

But that's not slowing down the president or vice president's schedule.

Cbs's ben tracy has the latest..

News that one of the vice president's closest aides, katie miller, tested positive for the virus, delayed mr pence's scheduled trip to iowa.

Miller was not on board air force 2, but 6 staffers who had recent exposure to her were removed..

Katie&she tested very good for a long period of time and then all the sudden today she tested positive.

She hasn't come into contact with me,.

She spent some time with the vice president.

Miller is with the vice president nearly every day.

Her husband is senior presidential aide stephen miller -- president trump attended their wedding in february held at washington's trump hotel.

Despite the potential exposure...mr pence did not wear a mask while in iowa.

We also now know that president trump was in the same room as his personal white house valet on tuesday&the day before the valet tested positive for coronavirus.

Today the president still addressed a group of world war 2 veterans at a ve day ceremony without wearing a mask.

The wind was blowing so hard at such a direction that if the plague ever reached them i'd be very surprised the president says he's now tested every day and so far is negative, but doctors say that may be a false sense of security.

Somebody could become infected, be incubating the virus and test negative every day, including yesterday, then this morning become infectious, still feel fine, and spread it to other people before the next test shows that they are, in fact, infected contradicting his own medical experts&today the president repeated his belief that the virus will go away&even without a vaccine.

This is going to go away without a vaccine its gonna go away and hopefully we won't see it again.

Meanwhile, the administration's shipments of the drug remdesivir, which has shown promise in treating the virus, have been slow to reach the most hard hit hospitals...frustra ting many doctors.

I think it's been somewhat chaotic and it has not been a transparent process.

Tag: the white house press secretary was asked today if president trump will ever wear a mask and she said that's up to him.

Sources say the president doesn't wear one because the white house believes americans do not want to see the commander in chief wearing a mask.

But this year the week falls as we're in the middle of a public health crisis nation wide.

Simple thank yous are going much deeper than before.

Our scott martin talks with a few starkville nurses and shares their story.

"i think we all feel a little bit more appreciated.

Of course we're all little more tired than we have been in years past.

But i mean we're definitely getting pats on the back from our doctors and other employees we work with.

We're definitely feeling the love."

Haile hagler.

We may not all know the faces behind these masks..but if you use the laird family clinic..these fine nurses are more like family.

And due to the coronavirus..they haven't really been able to see the ones they'd call extended family.

"we're missing lots of hugs.

They come in, they still call so we can talk to some of them by telephone.

Check on them daily or as often as we can.

We get to see a few of them that are sick coming in, but we do miss our babies very much.

Our patients here."

Annettw windle.

But that isn't stopping these nurses from providing critical care.

Something nurse mckenzie love says wasn't taught in school is tele-medicine.

And for the first time, the clinic is having to use technology to connect with patients..all thanks to covid-19.

"no.

This is not anything we would have ever envisioned when we went to nursing school.we're prepared for it now that we've got our feet wet and we're taking the best care of our patients, but it's not something i think anyone ever plans for."

"i think it's best you still get your eyes and hands on your patients..not just via telephone."

Even though some appointments have been behind a screen..patients have stepped up this week letting the nurses know their efforts aren't unnoticed.

"we've had patients that have bring us lunches, snacks, and they'll call and tell us how much they appreciate the hard work we're doing for them.

So of course that's a huge pat on the back."

It's the little things like that, that help these four keep going.

The love from those they care for..and one other.

"teamwork and your coworkers are the best.

Leaning on other nurses is your best lifeline.

We're an 8 to five family for sure."

The starkville nurses also left an encouraging message to all the nurses out there.

They are telling them to hang in there...and just to work as a team.

We take a look when the spirit of tupelo is being captured - 1 face at a time..

Allie martin talks to the photographer behind the ambitious undertaking..

As the city of tupelo celebrates its sesquicentennial, a local photographer wanted to do something special to showcase the residents of the all america city.

So throughout the year, 150 people who reflect the area's qualities, will be showcased as part of the project called "faces of tupelo " nats photo session with spencer on a recent sunny friday afternoon, jacqueline savoy was taking photos of tupelo native spencer kirpatrick, by the elvis statue at fairpark.

"i moved here two years ago and really fell in love with tupelo, with the community and the people and i wanted to show the community to other people."

She updates "faces of tupelo's" facebook page on a regular basis, with photos and stories about the people who embody the tupelo spirit.

"i want to get a wide diversity, kind of showing everything that tupelo emcompasses, i've been trying to get people who cook, dance, people who have a passion for tupelo, kind of showing everything, all the different things tupelo has, that even i've learned since i started this project, like, we have a pickleball team, i knew nothing about until now."

So far jacqueline savoy has 121 names for faces of tupelo, and she wants to get to 150, to coincide with the all america city's sesquicentaennial celebration this year.

She welcomes any suggestions of people who have helped make tupelo a better place to live, work and play.
