Local church finds new way to raise funds

Donations in many cases have come to a standstill.

News channel two's gary liberatore has the story of one local church coming up with a unique way to make some cash to pay the bills...and it's a unique way that may catch on with other churches.

(nat of car) we've seen a lot of drive-thrus in the past two months...but nothing like this.... "good to see you...how many would you like?

Six with sugar...four in one bag, two in another...."

(nat of bag) four in one bag...six in another.... tc : 56:00 "we're driving by and we saw the sign&" they saw the sign alright!

This drive thru....is specifically for....fried dough!

Tc : 00:49 "the bulletin to how are you& any idea when they're going to start no no no no st.

Louis gonzaga maronite catholic church in uitica dates back to 1910!

And sadly, thanks to the corona-virus, this church is seeing some rough financial times...just as many churches are...with no one in church to make sonations... (john nehme, church member) .

None .

None tc : 36:50 "and what we have decided to do since the church congregation hasn't been able to meet, trying to raise some money to sustain the economic life of the church.

We decided to sell genuine lebanese fried though.

Italians call a pizza freight, americans call it fried though, lebanese we call it the zlabia."

Call it what you will, it's still something many people love to grab..and take home..

(betty karrat, lifelong church member) tc : 50:05 "normally we do the fredo on sunday after church services and it's a way for all the pressures to be together, see each other, have conversation.

And right now it's a very difficult time.

Everyone misses first of all, coming to church, we miss our trip our priest, our church our parish, our parish family."

(father boutros elhachem) tc : 44:46 "i want to say thank you for your generosity, thank you for loving our church and thank you for loving this event and this action.

Because we need each other in this difficult situation."

(jacque murad, new york mills resident) tc : 54:30 "you know what, number one it's made with love, number two it's made with the beautiful hands of the lebanese and serien people of this community but mostly it's made with love."

That love, at $2 a piece tunred into $2,000 for the church in week one.

Tc : 54:43 "we love our church, they support us and we support them and we're so happy that we can still at least drive by and say hello."

And they'll be spreadiung this sweet love every saturday from 9- to-1 here on rutger street in utica...until they can reopen.
