This is the astonishing moment three elephants crossed a busy road and stormed into a Buddhist temple.

The jumbos emerged from woodland and ambled across the highway in Nakhon Nayok, central Thailand on Tuesday (07/07) morning.

They even kept an orderly single file before stomping through the gates of a nearby religious building.

Wildlife officers said that the elephants had been taking a shortcut through the temple in order to reach the jungle.

They returned later in the evening have successfully gathered food from the trees behind the temple, where several monks live.

Rangers warned residents to take extra care when using roads as the trio of elephants could emerge again.

One officer said: "These three elephants have been seen several times recently coming down the hill looking for food during the night but they are friendly and have never posed threat to the locals.

"We normally stay alert while tracking them and know when they will appear, then we can herd them back as soon as they arrive.

''However, we can't always know for sure when they will wander into the area so we are asking everyone to be extra careful at the moment.'' There are an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 elephants that live in the wild in Thailand, sometimes leading to friction when the elephants come into contact with humans.
