A clever goat escaped and ran onto a roof moments before it was to be cooked for Eid.

The creature was tethered to a pole waiting to be ritually slaughtered for the Eid al-Adha celebrations in Tiro Village, Central Java, Indonesia on August 1.

Owner Muhammad Ghufron said they planned to cook the goat but it fled when they went to untie it.

He said: "The goat belongs to my aunt.

She gave it to us for the Eid meal.

So we tied it to the pole to keep safe but somehow it escaped.'' Muhammad said the goat escaped when the rope tied to its neck was loosened before it was slaughtered.

The men preparing for the feast tried to chase the goat but it was quick and scampered onto the roof.

The tiles were too brittle for the men to run across so they used a long stick to pull the goat back.

Muhammad added that it was easy for the goat to reach the roof because it was low.

He said: "The position of the house is under the road so the goat can jump directly onto the tiles." After a few minutes of pursuit, the goat was finally caught.

It was then slaughtered by the villagers for the feast.
