The number one priority for educators in our area: a safety plan for the school year.

Access.wgbh.org good evening.

It is the number one priority for educators in our area: a safety plan for the school year.

For traditional face to face classrooms, administrators have a protocol to when or if an employee or student has a positive covid test.

Wcbi's bobby martinez spent the day in winston county and and joins us live in the studio with their plan.

So bobby, what does happen if there is a positive test?

Aundrea..

Immediate action will be taken... top administrators tell me it is important that they act fast... because the last thing they want is school wide outbreak..

Adapting to change... "this generatio has never experienced something like this.."

But with a positive mindset... "we hope that w can have a great school..

Kind of a school year like no other.."

Covid 19 has placed school districts in mississippi in uncharted territory..

The louisville municipal school district made the decision to push their start date for traditional and hybrid learning..

To august 20th due to the increase of positive cases and david luke, superintendent of louisville municipal school district... says letters will be sent to families once a student or faculty member tests positive..

Sot - david luke - louisville superintendent of schools "a person that ha tested positive or someone in the household has tested positive, we are going to notify that person with written documentation you know talking about their quarantine days and procedures and steps that they are supposed to take."

Now if there is just one positive case..

The school will still remain open..

But if its greater than three..

Sot - david luke - louisville superintendent of schools "so once you ge greater than three confirmed cases in a group that's when you go to look at the possibility quarantine the group."

Paul hayles, head of school at winston academy..

Says once a person tests positive..

They must immediately go into quarantine..

And from there..

Sot - paul hayles - head of school - winston academy "then what we hav to do is find out if it is a staff member, what people came into close contact, within 6 feet for 15 minutes.

We have to break that down, we narrow that down normally that drops the number way down to a minute number in comparison to what would have been."

Hayles says a majority of students have chosen the traditional way of learning..

But each day before stepping on campus..

They must answer a few questions..

"right here is on of our check-in stations our students report coming out of the parking lot in the mornings.

They come in and our coaches are standing here and they answer the questionnaire and they have their temperature taken and their hand is stamped and then they enter school.

Once again if anything on the questionnaire they answer yes to then they go home.

If their temperature is 100.4 then they will go home.

But we've been very fortunate in our days in return we have nobody with fever and no answers of yes at this time."

Both hayles and luke say they are taking it day by day..

And are relying on students, faculty and parents to work as
